Shortly after the Celtics reportedly traded away veteran big man Georges Niang to the Utah Jazz, Boston reportedly discovered his substitute.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Celtics have signed ahead Chris Boucher to a one-year cope with a $3.3 million cap hit.

Boucher, 32, has been a stalwart on the bench for the Raptors over the earlier seven seasons. As famous by Charania, Boucher is Toronto’s all-time franchise file in factors, rebounds, blocks, minutes, and video games performed off the bench — and was the final remaining member of the 2019 NBA championship crew.

The 6-foot-9 Boucher will doubtless play common minutes on a Celtics crew that has already misplaced loads of frontcourt depth this season after the offseason exits of Kristaps Porzingis, Luke Kornet, Al Horford, and now Niang.

He averaged 10.0 factors and 4.5 rebounds in 50 video games for the Raptors final season, all showing off the bench.

Past Boucher’s standing as a reliable presence off the bench, Boston additionally stands to avoid wasting cash by dealing away Niang and including Boucher. By buying and selling Niang’s expiring $8.2 million contract, Boston was in a position to alleviate a few of their hefty tax invoice.

ESPN’s Bobby Marks noted prior to the signing of Boucher that Boston’s tax penalties dropped from $73.1 million to $30.4 million by shifting Niang’s contract. By changing Niang’s $8.2 million wage with Boucher’s $3.3 million payout, Boston stands to avoid wasting practically $5 million in wage and hundreds of thousands extra in luxury-tax payouts.
